The pieces shown are typical of the quilts that were made by the Amish from the 19th to the middle of the 20th century. The Amish believe in simplicity and that fact is reflected in their quilts, style of dress and decoration, as well as their general way of life. Following the rule of simplicity, only solid colored cloth was, and still is today, allowed for use in quilts, clothing and home decorating. While the Amish today often make quilts of calico print for sale to those outside their communities, they continue to make these striking designs for their own use as well as for sale to the community at large.
